Dear Grandmother:
 
Received your welcome letter today and was very pleased to hear from you. Glad to hear Marie’s eye is coming along and also the Dudes paw that he got caught in the trap.
 
I am in the best of health at present and hope you and the tribe are the same. I listened to the World Series games and was hoping the Browns would win, but guess the Cards outclassed them. The announcer said the weather in good old St. Louis was nice and warm and ideal for baseball. It never dries up enough over here to play baseball and with the exception of a few days I’ve wore a mackinaw all summer. Well so long and take good care of yourself. Howdy to all.

July 4, 1945 Reims, France   Howdy Dude:   Received a letter from you not long ago. We are hauling for troops that will go to the Pacific. We haven’t had a day off since the war ended. We worked on the June 6 D-day holiday and also yesterday July 4. We don’t mind it though, as we know the sooner the men and materials get to the Pacific from here, the sooner we can finish off the Japs.   We have four battle stars now and have a chance for the 5 th . I definitely have 73 points now and there is a possibility that I may get 78. Sure hope the lower the score quite a bit when it comes out this month.   I am in the best of health and hope you are the same. Someone got our dog a few days before the war ended. Reims, France July 5, 1945   Dear Dad:   Received a v mail from you today from June 24 th  and was glad to hear from you. We are having a stretch of good weather after a week of rain and cold days. We are still hauling for troops going to the Pacific.             Grandma was telling me in her letter that you were going to take her to the 4 of July picnic at Lawrenceton. I was wondering if you went up to the old farm. I wonder if there is any way you could find out if it is sold or not, and if it has not been sold how much is against it in taxes, and how many heirs there are. I have saved a little money since I’m in the army and I see in the G.I. Bill of Rights that Veterans can borrow from two to four thousand dollars to go in business. I was wondering if you could find out these things for me, as the old farm is the type of place I’m interested in. One that won’t cost too much and that I can do my own improving ...

Epinal, France June 11, 1945   Dear Dad:               Received several letters from you, but this is the first chance I’ve had to answer. I am with a group of twenty trucks. We are attached to an engineer forestry company for thirty days and will haul poles and sawed timbers. We are at the southern end of the Argonne Forest in the Vosges Mountains. The Moselle River runs right through town. It’s very nice country here, a lot like Missouri. So you were surprised to hear where I was when the war ended. The jobs a trucking outfit gets would surprise a lot of people. Just because we have been lucky is no sign we just came over here for a boat excursion or sight seeing tour. When Patton raced across France he had no railroads so they moved the stuff by trucks. After the Rhine crossing the rails stopped. Again they hauled the stuff in trucks.
