Dear Dad:
Received both an air mail and a v-mail from you in the last couple days. We are still having good weather here although it has rained and cooled off a little the last few days.
We are hauling for the troops that are going to the Pacific. Some will come through the states for a 30 Day furlough and some will go direct. We are not attached to an army now, but are attached to Assembly Area Command. If we stay with this outfit we will probably be here for the remainder of this year, as it will take that long to get all the troops redeployed. Of course it’s like the Captain says, our assignment can change any time.
I was reading in the paper today that there is a possibility that the war department would lower the final critical score for discharge to 78. If I get that fifth star, I’ll have 78 right on the nose. We haven’t heard anything of the fifth star since we submitted for it. It’s for the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Mountains last December and January. If it don’t come through I guess I’m up the creek for another year or more.
Our company had received a Meritorious Service Award and soon we will be authorized to wear the Meritorious Service patch. It is a gold wreath a couple inches round and is worn on the cuff of the right sleeve.
Well Dad hope this letter finds you all well and Larry over the mumps. You be sure to make a good ball player out of him. I am in the best of health at present. So long.
Your pal,
The Jug
P.S. We win one game 4-3 Lose two 5-4 & 4-1. All were good games and win or lose I’d rather play ball than eat.
